Geoff Oglivy – Professional Golf Player

Geoff Ogilvy was another young starter at golf, shooting his first par on a professional course at the age of nine and winning the German Amateur Championship at 19.

However, the Adelaide-born Australian waited until a month shy of his 21st birthday before turning professional, winning a card on the European Tour by graduating through qualifying school.

Having played in Europe for two years, Geoff Ogilvy then turned his attentions to the US, joining the PGA Tour in 2001 where he made a steady start, each year regaining his card and finishing in the top 100 before his breakthrough tournament success in 2005 Chrysler Classic of Tucson.

However, it was 2006 that Geoff Ogilvy really made an impact when winning the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and then going on to taste Major success for the first time in the US Open.

In one of the most memorable finishes ever to the competition, Geoff Ogilvy kept his head while those around him were losing theirs. Spectacularly-improbable pars on the last two holes saw him win by one shot as both Colin Montgomerie and Phil Mickelson threw away what appeared to be golden chances to win the tournament with double-bogey sixes at the final hole.

In 2009 Geoff Ogilvy won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship for a second time, comfortably defeating Paul Casey in the final head-to-head.

A talented junior athlete in many sports, Geoff Ogilvy is a passionate follower of Aussie Rules football. In 2008 he returned home to win the Australian PGA Championship.
